Categorizing Aluminum Bars Based on Processing Techniques

1. Extruded Aluminum Bar

The extrusion process is widely utilized in the manufacturing of aluminum bars. It involves shaping and pushing aluminum bars onto metal materials at a specific temperature, taking advantage of the raw material's excellent plasticity.

The following is the flow of the production process for extruded aluminum bars:

  • Preparation for extrusion;

  • Extrusion;

  • Stretching and Straightening;

  • Sawing finished products, trimming, and framing.

The following are common types of extruded aluminum bar alloys: 1050, 1060, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2024, 2618, 5052, 5083, 5086, 5454, 5754, 6061, 6063, 6082, 7003, 7022, 7050, 7055, and 7075.

2. Casting aluminum bar

The production process of the casting aluminum bar consists of several steps. Initially, pure aluminum or aluminum alloy ingots are prepared in accordance with the specified composition ratio. Subsequently, they are heated manually until they reach a molten state, transforming into aluminum alloy liquid. Then, this liquid is poured into an aluminum bar mold cavity using either a professional aluminum bar mold or an appropriate procedure. Lastly, the mixture is allowed to cool down, resulting in the formation of solid aluminum bars.

The manufacturing procedure for Linsy aluminum billets:

  • Smelting

  • Casting

  • Sawdust

  • Homogenization of aluminum rods

  • Refrigeration and cleaning of rods

3. Forged aluminum bar

The process of forging aluminum bars involves the use of forging equipment, which requires extensive processing. Nevertheless, the forgings have a dense microstructure and are less prone to internal defects. As a result, aluminum forged bars are extensively utilized in the manufacturing of components that demand high precision, such as valve seats, valve cores, and valve stems.

The following outlines the steps involved in the production of forged aluminum bars:

  • blanking and heating

  • Plastic deformation (continuous forging)

  • subsequent processing

  • quality inspection

  • Packaging and delivery

The following are common alloys of forged aluminum bar: 2A01, 2A02, 2A10, 2A11, 2A12, 3A21, 3003, 3004, 3005, 5A02, 5A03, 5A05, 5B05, 5A06, 5050, 5052, 5056, 5086, 6A02, 6101, 6005, 6063, 6061, and 6082.

Temper: H112, T6, T652, T73, T735

Maximum diameter: 650mm

Application:

Aluminum forged bars find application in a wide range of industries such as aircraft, aerospace, automotive, construction, electrical appliances, military and national defense, marine, petrochemical, and process equipment.

The high strength-to-weight ratio is beneficial for various applications such as the fuselage, car frame, panel, and wheels.

Corrosion resistance is essential for various applications, including fasteners, structural components, building frames, decorative building elements, processing equipment, and marine equipment.

Wear resistance and durability are essential qualities for process equipment, fasteners, and certain motor components.

Forging is a term that typically describes the process of shaping metal materials through solid deformation at high temperatures in order to achieve the desired product shape.

Casting involves pouring the melted metal material into the mold cavity in order to achieve the desired shape of the final product.

4. Fine drawing aluminum bar

Stretching is the metal-plastic forming method of aluminum alloy billets that involves applying a tensile force to gradually reduce the cross-sectional area of the drawing die hole, resulting in products with the same size and shape as the die hole. This process, also known as drawing, is extensively utilized in the production of tubes, rods, shapes, and wires. Since the drawing process for aluminum and aluminum alloy products typically occurs at room temperature, it is commonly referred to as cold drawing.

Fine-drawn aluminum bar features:

  • Accurate dimensions and polished exterior.

  • Simple operation.

  • Cold work hardening can enhance the strength of aluminum bars.

  • Quick stretching speed and high efficiency.

(2). 1060 aluminum bar

Key Features: The 1060 aluminum alloy bar consists of aluminum content exceeding 99.6%. It possesses excellent elongation and tensile strength, making it suitable for meeting all conventional processing requirements such as stamping and stretching. Additionally, it demonstrates high formability.

Simultaneously, the 1060 aluminum bar is characterized by its high plasticity, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity. However, it exhibits low strength, cannot be strengthened through heat treatment, and has poor machinability. It is suitable for gas welding, hydrogen atom welding, and contact welding but not ideal for brazing. It can easily withstand various types of pressure processing and stretching as well as bending.

Application: It finds extensive usage in products that do not require high strength, such as conductive media, electronic components, chemical instruments, parts used in sheet metal processing, concave vessels created through deep drawing or spinning, welding components, heat exchangers, clock surfaces and plates, nameplates, and more.

2. 2000 aluminum bar

(1). 2A12 aluminum bar

Feature: 2A12 aluminum alloy is a type of high-strength duralumin that can be strengthened through heat treatment. It exhibits excellent spot welding performance, although there is a risk of intergranular crack formation when gas welding and argon arc welding methods are employed. Additionally, after undergoing cold work hardening, 2A12 aluminum alloy demonstrates good machinability.

Usage: This application is suitable for situations that demand exceptional strength and hardness, even at high temperatures. It is commonly employed in the manufacturing of heavy forgings, thick plates, and extruded materials for various aerospace components such as structural parts for aircraft, fuel tanks for the first stage of multi-stage rockets, and parts for spacecraft. Additionally, it can be used in the production of wheels, truck frames, and suspension system parts.

(2). 2A14 aluminum bar

Feature: The alloy can be utilized as a 2A50 alloy for the production of forged aluminum bars. The key distinction between 2A14 and 2A50 lies in its high copper content, which contributes to its high strength and excellent thermal resistance. However, it does not possess the same level of malleability in a hot state as 2A50. In addition, this alloy demonstrates favorable machinability, resistivity, and resistance to spot welding and seam welding, but it exhibits poor resistance to electric arc welding and gas welding.

Usage: 2A14 is extensively used in the processes of free forging and die forging, particularly for intricate shapes.

(3). 2014 aluminum bar

Feature: The 2014 aluminum alloy bar is classified as a duralumin alloy and is suitable for the production of forged aluminum bars. It exhibits greater strength and improved thermal strength compared to the 2A50 alloy. However, its plasticity in hot conditions is not as favorable as that of the 2A50 alloy. The 2014 aluminum bar demonstrates excellent machinability, along with good performance in contact welding, spot welding, and roll welding. On the other hand, it has limitations in terms of electric arc welding and gas welding. It can be reinforced through heat treatment and offers extrusion capabilities.

Application: This application is suitable for situations that demand superior strength and hardness, especially in high-temperature environments. Examples include aircraft components like heavy forgings, thick plates, and extruded materials. It is also used in the manufacturing of wheels and structural elements, as well as in the construction of multi-stage rocket first-stage fuel tanks and spacecraft parts. Additionally, it is commonly employed for the truck frame and suspension system components.
